HOW TO CREATE A COOL BAR AT HOME
Twins Richard and Antony Joseph, from innovative kitchenware designer Joseph Joseph, know a thing or two combining form and function. Over the last 14 years they’ve reinvented chopping boards, knives and tongs, making drawer-dwellers cool again. Now they’ve turned their attention to barware. Here, they share how to create a killer home bar.
ESSENTIAL PARTY KIT FROM JOSEPH JOSEPH
CREATE A ZONE
The kitchen used to be closed off at parties, with formal spaces preferred for entertaining. Now, it’s the centre of the party and often geared for gatherings. Antony makes it easy for people to help themselves by putting a huge copper bowl on his kitchen island, filling it with ice and drinks. Then he kicks things off with a classic cocktail: Vodka Martini with a twist of lemon.
CHOOSE CLEAN KIT
The twins know a thing or two about clever party shortcuts. They devised the Catcher, a citrus reamer that collects pips and fruit pulp while you make guests a Whiskey Sour. Likewise, they developed the Barwise Cap-Collecting Bottle Opener, which holds up to 16 caps “so you can open beers without having to constantly visit the bin,” says Richard.
MOVE THE BOOZE
Beyond the bar, passing drinks and snacks around requires the skill of a Cirque De Soleil performer. One of the first pieces of kit the twins designed was the Grip Tray, which has non slip, rubber surface to prevent objects from slipping. The other buzz-kill for party hosts is cleaning up after guests. ”We got sick of finding pips down the back of the sofa the next day,” says Richard. So the Double Dish was invented, which has a bowl for pips and shells.
MAKE IT SPEEDY
Party economics are simple — the less time it takes you to open the wine, the more time there is for drinking it. Having suffered their fair share of malfunctioning corks, the new Barwise Easy-Action Winding Corkscrew removes the plug in one action—and includes a secret foil cutter in the rim. Another timesaving must-have: Quick Snap Ice Cube Tray. “Each cube has a release switch, so you don’t have to bang it on the counter,” says Antony.
